What is Holistic Healing?
Great question! Holistic healing is a form of treatment that encompasses the whole person (mind, body, and soul) and emotional well-being. This approach goes beyond just the cognitive state, and works to support healing and growth from the inside-out. The primary purpose of holistic healing is to achieve proper balance in life.
The basis for holistic healing is the fundamental inner knowledge that we have the power to heal ourselves. We know ourselves well enough at our core to determine what we need at any given moment, and trust that our intuition can guide us through any challenge.
In traditional psychotherapy you have the opportunity to explore the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are prevalent in your life. You may begin to understand patterns of behaviors, especially as they pertain to your current view of yourself and your life.
Holistic psychotherapy takes you one step deeper into understanding and identifying your behavior patterns. This will enable you to make positive changes in your life and embody your truest self. This can include exploring spirituality and what that may mean to you. Sometimes the term spirituality is met with resistance, but spirituality can be anything which involves centering yourself; such as yoga, meditation, or just being in nature.
I blend traditional psychotherapy and holistic healing methods by combining mindfulness practices with science based methods; such as traditional talk therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). By recognizing what thoughts or feelings are holding you back, we can not only break through unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, but begin to envision and create changes that will optimize your life.
What does a holistic approach look like?
Holistic psychotherapy can vary from client to client. Often we work to break away from the “roles” clients identify with and return to your innermost self. We explore what is going on mentally, as well as physically in a session. I may ask you to seek out where you feel body sensations associated with whatever emotional experience we are working through. Other times, we will take time to identify self-care routines and develop skills around recognizing when your body is activated; understanding how to settle the nervous system.
All people have an innate healing power, which is why I work with clients to navigate through difficult events using the healing practices of mind, body, and soul. Using the power of both science and intuition, we can create energetic shifts that result in lasting change.
