Embracing Change and Times of Transition
The month of August has always felt like a transitional month. Whether it’s going back to school, the days slowly getting shorter, or the activity of summer beginning to wind its way down.
From the moment we come into the world until our last, the only thing that we can count on being constant is change. Although times of transition can feel overwhelming, there is something grounding in knowing that change is a constant in our lives.
Some changes we experience are things that we plan for; such as moving, career changes, and travel. Other changes can be sudden and unexpected, like the loss of a friend, or the end of a relationship. The important thing about transitions and change is to recognize that whether big or small, change is a constant. Reacting to change is also a normal way of responding, to make sense of it. The more we hold onto and ruminate on the changes and transitions in our lives, the more it weighs us down.
One of my favorite quotes on change, reads:
“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance” – Alan Watts
How to move through change and transition?
Begin to reflect on areas of your life in change, or transition.
The first step is naming it! Remember, the only thing we are guaranteed in life is change, so why not lean into it.
Once you name the current change or transition(s) showing up for you, take time to examine what you’re thinking and feeling about it.
Don’t feel the need to make any sort of decision right away, honor the space of reflection.
Trust that no matter the outcome, you are capable of whatever has been thrown your way.
Taking control and plunging into the dance of transition is not an easy task. It is important to feel supported and grounded through all transitions, no matter the size. Feeling stability through the ever-evolving dance of life helps you feel confident and grounded.
